Smart Stainless Steel Installations for Howardson Works in Derby

At Smart Balustrades, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality balustrade and handrail solutions that combine strength, safety and style. Our successful project at Howardson Works on Ashbourne Road, Derby, is a prime example of this approach in action. 

Working in partnership with Howardson Group Ltd, alongside appointed QS Ian Howard and Rees CM Architectural Design, we were tasked with supplying and installing bespoke stainless steel systems throughout the building’s internal spaces. The project, completed in April 2025, represents a significant milestone for the site and provides us with the opportunity to showcase the durability and elegance of our stainless steel range in an industrial setting.

Delivering Safety and Style at Howardson Works

The scope of works included multiple areas of the property, beginning with the main internal staircase. Here, we installed our SMART Professional stainless steel grade 304 balustrade system, which featured 42mm diameter satin brushed stainless steel posts and a matching top rail. 

To maintain transparency and light flow, the system was completed with 10mm thick clear toughened glass infill panels, secured using a combination of side fixings and base plate fixings, finished neatly with cover roses. Standing between 900mm and 1100mm high and engineered to a 0.74kN loading requirement, the staircase balustrade provides both safety and sophistication, ensuring the space remains functional while retaining a clean, modern look.

To complement this installation, we also supplied and fitted a wall-fixed handrail system to the same staircase. Manufactured from the same satin brushed stainless steel for consistency, the 42mm diameter handrail was securely fixed to the walls using robust wall rail brackets. In line with the client’s design requirements, these were installed without cover roses, creating a simple, practical and professional finish.

The work continued to the building’s back staircase, where we installed a second stainless steel balustrade system, again using grade 304 materials for durability and consistency across the site. This system mirrored the main staircase installation, with satin brushed stainless steel posts and top rail, paired with 10mm toughened clear glass infill panels and fixed using a combination of side and base plate fixings with cover roses. Matching in height and loading requirements to the front staircase, this installation ensures the same high standard of safety and design integrity is carried throughout the property.
