Large-Scale Residential Balustrading Package Delivered at Riverside Park Yacht Club, Nottingham

Design Your Own Balustrade

Project Overview

SMART Balustrades was appointed by Crown Construction Projects Limited to deliver one of the company’s largest residential balustrading packages to date at the Riverside Park Yacht Club development in Nottingham.

Designed by Franklin Ellis Architects, the scheme comprises three contemporary residential apartment blocks overlooking the River Trent, creating a landmark waterside development that combines modern architecture with high-quality residential living.

The project involved the manufacture and installation of an impressive 960 linear metres of stainless steel and glass balustrade and handrail systems, including 855 metres of SMART Vero Steel balustrades and 105 metres of SMART Vivo Steel wall-fixed handrails installed throughout the development.

At the time of completion, Riverside Park Yacht Club became SMART Balustrades’ second highest-value project and one of the largest residential installations ever delivered by the business. The sheer scale of the package required extensive planning, phased installation and close collaboration between SMART Balustrades, Crown Construction Projects and the wider site team to ensure works progressed safely and efficiently across multiple buildings and floor levels.

Spanning external balconies, communal staircases and internal circulation areas across Blocks A, B and C, the project demonstrates SMART Balustrades’ capability to successfully deliver large-scale residential balustrading packages while maintaining exceptional quality, consistency and compliance throughout.

Scope of Works

The Riverside Park Yacht Club development represented one of the largest balustrading packages ever undertaken by SMART Balustrades, with almost one kilometre of bespoke balustrade and handrail systems installed throughout the three residential blocks.

Overall, the project comprised:

  • 855 metres of SMART Vero Steel stainless steel and glass balustrades
  • 105 metres of SMART Vivo Steel wall-fixed handrails
  • Systems installed across Blocks A, B and C
  • External balcony installations from the first to sixth floors
  • Internal communal staircases throughout the development

Delivering this volume of work required meticulous manufacturing, logistics and installation planning to ensure consistency across every elevation, staircase and balcony throughout the scheme.

Compliance and Technical Considerations

Delivering almost one kilometre of balustrading across a multi-block residential development introduced significant technical and logistical challenges.

Every metre of balustrade had to achieve the required 0.74kN loading performance while maintaining identical detailing, finishes and alignment throughout the development. With hundreds of individual glass panels, stainless steel posts, top rails and handrails installed across multiple elevations, maintaining consistency became just as important as meeting structural requirements.

The external balcony installations required grade 316 stainless steel to withstand long-term exposure to the elements, while the internal communal areas utilised grade 304 stainless steel to provide a durable, low-maintenance solution suitable for everyday residential use.

Extensive coordination with the main contractor was essential throughout the programme to ensure fixing grounds, balcony interfaces and communal access routes remained available as installations progressed through each phase of the development.

Delivery and Installation

The scale of Riverside Park Yacht Club required SMART Balustrades to carefully phase both manufacture and installation across the three residential blocks.

Rather than treating the development as a single installation, works were planned around individual buildings, floor levels and programme milestones to ensure other trades could continue progressing simultaneously.

Over the course of the project, SMART Balustrades successfully installed:

  • 855 metres of external and internal balustrades
  • 105 metres of wall-fixed handrails
  • Systems spanning six storeys across multiple residential buildings
  • Hundreds of metres of glass infill panels, stainless steel posts and handrails

Maintaining consistent alignment, glass spacing and finish quality across such a large quantity of balustrading required careful quality control at every stage of manufacture and installation.

Through detailed planning and close collaboration with Crown Construction Projects, SMART Balustrades delivered one of the company’s largest residential projects safely, efficiently and in line with programme requirements.

Project Outcome

Riverside Park Yacht Club remains one of the most significant projects within SMART Balustrades’ portfolio.

The successful completion of 960 linear metres of bespoke stainless steel and glass balustrading systems across three residential blocks demonstrates the company’s capability to deliver complex, high-value residential developments on a large scale.

From sixth-floor balconies overlooking the River Trent to internal communal staircases serving residents throughout the development, every installation was completed with the same focus on quality, compliance and architectural appearance.

As SMART Balustrades’ second highest-value completed project, Riverside Park Yacht Club showcases our ability to manage large-scale manufacturing, phased logistics and complex installation programmes while delivering consistent, high-quality finishes throughout extensive residential developments across the UK.
