SMART Balustrades is proud to be supporting the construction of a new 78-bed care home in Havant, Hampshire, a development designed to provide modern, high-quality accommodation for residents while strengthening the local healthcare infrastructure.

The project is being delivered by Feltham Construction on behalf of the client and forms part of a wider pipeline of purpose-built care developments focused on resident wellbeing, accessibility and modern building standards. The scheme is currently progressing on site, with works continuing throughout 2026.

Balustrade Systems Installed

For this project, SMART Balustrades is supplying and installing a combination of our SMART Vivo Steel and SMART Vero Steel systems across the building’s circulation areas and stair cores.

These systems have been selected for their durability, clean architectural appearance and suitability for high-use environments such as healthcare facilities. Across the development, the systems will be installed on five internal staircases, providing safe, compliant access for residents, visitors and staff throughout the building.

Scope of Works

Our package includes the supply and installation of both internal balustrades and wall-fixed handrails, along with additional high-level protective balustrades in key areas of the building.

Key elements of the scope include:

  • External and internal balustrades constructed from grade 316 stainless steel, featuring 48mm diameter reinforced satin brushed stainless-steel posts and top rails with 11.5mm clear toughened laminated glass infill panels. These systems are installed with base plate fixings and cover roses and reach an overall height of 1800mm, designed to meet 1.5kN loading requirements applied at 1100mm.
  • Internal staircase balustrades to five stair cores, formed from grade 304 stainless steel systems with 42mm satin brushed stainless-steel posts and top rails, complete with 10mm toughened glass infill panels. These balustrades are installed between 900mm and 1100mm in height and are designed to meet 0.74kN loading requirements.
  • Wall fixed handrails to each internal staircase, constructed from 42mm diameter satin brushed stainless steel handrails with wall rail brackets, providing additional safety and support for building users.

Together, these systems form a coordinated solution that balances structural performance with a clean and contemporary finish suited to a modern healthcare environment.

Technical and Design Considerations

Healthcare and care home environments require particular attention to safety, durability and ease of maintenance. The balustrade systems selected for this project reflect these priorities.

The use of stainless steel and laminated glass provides excellent long-term durability while maintaining a hygienic surface that is easy to clean and maintain. Laminated glass panels also provide enhanced safety performance in the unlikely event of damage.

In addition, all systems are designed to comply with the required loading criteria and safety standards applicable to circulation areas and staircases in care environments.

Project Progress

Construction of the Havant Care Home is currently progressing on site, with SMART Balustrades actively supporting the project team as the building continues to take shape.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Feltham Construction and the wider project team as this important development moves toward completion and begins to serve the local community.
